Question

To print custom-designed T-shirts, Maria must pay $45 fee plus $15 for each T-shirt. What equations could be used to find the number t of T-shirts Maria could print with $390? How many T-shirts can Maria buy? 

 

I always have a really hard time with solving story problems, so if anybody would be able to explain how to get the right equations it would help me a lot. Thank you!!

All I was able to do so far was get 45+15 but after that I'm not quite sure what to do...

The $45 is a one time set up fee that is independent of the

number of tee shirts printed.  After paying the $45 set up

fee, the rest of the cost is $15 times the number of shirts.

 

Your cost function as a function of the number

of Tee shirts printed is:

 

C(T) = 15T + 45

 

If we have $390 then

 

390 = 15T + 45

15T = 390-45

15T = 345

T = 345/15

T = 23 shirts printed

One shirt would cost $45 + $15

 

Two shirts would cost $45 + 2(15)

 

Three shirts would cost $45 + 4(15)

 

Let X = the number of shirts

 

The left side of the equation equals 390 on the right side of the equation.

 

With that information, you should be able to write the equation yourself.
