I need help with this question please

Fifth graders vote to determine where they want to go on a field trip. One third of the fifth graders want to go bowling two sixths of the fifth graders want to go to the zoo one sixth of the fifth graders want to go to the museum sixteen students want to do activities at the town park how many fifth graders. It's to determine where they want to go on the field trip ?

My son has been given this same math problem but I don't understand how you got to the answer. I seem to be getting lost in the steps as they are outlined above. Also, I initially thought to add all the fractions using the LCD. I guess I don't understand why that wouldn't work (and it doesn't but I don't get why).

First, be very sure that you recognize the "of the" versus the given value of 16.
 
Yes, you may convert the fractions using the LCD:
     Bowling      +         Zoo     +      Museum    +     Park    =    All
      (1/3)x       +       (2/6)x   +       (1/6)x      +     16       =     x
       (2/6)x      +       (2/6)x   +       (1/6)x      +     16       =     x          [convert fractions to common denominator]
        (5/6)x                                                   +     16       =     x
 
    16 = (1/6)x
     96 = x
