Kevin drew a scale drawing of his living room  The actual room is 16 feet long  If the room is 12 inches long in the drawing, what is the scale of the drawing?

Candice, I'm pretty sure you have to convert the numbers to the same thing, like feet or inches. 

So, when it says the room is 16 feet long, well that's the same as 16 ft x 12 inches = 192 inches long.

Now if the drawing shows 12 inches to represent 192 inches that's the ratio, right?

That reduces by dividing both numbers by 12 to

It's scale is 1 inch = 16 inches 

 

or since 4 inches is one third of 12 inches, you could also say

1 inch = 1 1/3 feet
