if recipe requires 2/3 cup of oil and I have 1 1/2 cups of oil, what fraction of the total oil is used for each recipe?

I think the answer is 2 1/4 but I can make it make sense...  2 1/4 what?  2 1/4 of the total 1 1/2 cups?

(2/3)/(1 1/2)

Let's convert 1 1/2 into a fraction.  This is 3/2...

(2/3)/(3/2)

Let's take the inverse of the denominator, also known as the divisor, and multiply it by the numerator...

(2/3)(2/3)

Let's multiply the numerators together, (2)(2)=4.

Let's multiply the denominators together, (3)(3)=9

4/9
