Diameter and fractions

Question

There is a picture of two circ inside each other. The diameter of the larger circle is 4 1/2". From the outer edge of the smaller circle to the larger circle it is measured 1 5/8". The question asks for the diameter of the smaller circle. The answer is supposed to be 1 1/4". I just don't know how to figure this out. Thanks

diameter of large circle=4 1/2 =9/2

 

 

distance from outer edge of the smaller circle to the larger circle 1 5/8=13/8

 

to find the diameter of small circle , we have to subtract both side distance   so 2(13/8)

 

9/2-2(13/8)=9/2-13/4=18/4-13/4=5/4=1 1/4
