of y=mx+b.  m is the slope so for y = 5x +1, m=5

 

Parallel lines have the same slope.  Thus, you are looking

for the equation of a line with slope m = 5 through (2,6)

 

Use the point slope formula: y-y₁ = m(x-x₁)

where m=5, and (x₁,y₁) = (2,6)

 

y-6 = 5(x-2)

y-6 = 5x-10

y = 5x - 4

The slope of your new line will be m = 5 BECAUSE IT WILL BE A PARALLEL LINE (same slope as y = 5x +1).

 

So your new line will be y = 5x + b  and now you can substitute the given (2,6) and thereby calculate b.
