fine time taken by both planes to travel

Plane A flies 2700 miles I. The Same amount of time it takes plane B to fly 3040 miles. Plane B is flying 85mph faster than plane A. Find the amount of time it takes for each plane to travel their respective distances

Plane A

 

Distance traveled = 2700 miles

 

time taken  = t

 

Speed of plane A = x mph

 

Speed = distance /time

 

x = 2700/t

 

t = 2700/ x  ______ equation 1

 

 

Plane B

 

Distance traveled = 3040 miles

time taken = t

Speed of plane B = x +  85 mph

Speed = distance /time

x +85= 3040/t

t = 3040/ (x+85) ______ equation 2

 

Now we can equate equation 1 and 2

 

2700 / x = 3040/(x+85)

 

2700(x+85) = 3040 x

 

2700x + 229500= 3040x

 

229500=340x

 

x = 675 mph

 

substitute x= 675 in equation 1

 

t = 2700/ x 

 

t= 2700/675

 

t = 4

 

So time taken by both plane =  4 hrs
