A container ship left the dania pier and traveled north. And aircraft carrier left 4 hours later traveling at 30mph in an effort to catch up to the container ship. After traveling for 8 hours the aircraft carrier finally caught up. What was the container ship's average speed?

Speed=Distance/Time
Distance=Speed*Time

 

The container ship had been traveling for 12 hours before the aircraft carrier caught up to it.
The aircraft covered the same distance as the container ship in 8 hours at a rate of 30 mph.

Speed*12hours = 30mph*8hours

12hrs*(Speed) = 240 miles

Speed = 240miles÷12hours

Speed = 20mph

The container ship's average speed was 20mph
