the number decreased by 80 means x-80

 

x/9 = x-80  multiply both sides by 9

x = 9(x-80)

x = 9x-720   subtract 9x from both sides

x-9x = 9x-720-9x

-8x = -720   divide both sides by -8

 

-8x/(-8) = -720/(-8)

x = 90

 

Check:  x/9=x-80

            90/9=90-80

            10=10
