I don't get what the total of the cards were before the dog ate it.

Subtract 8 from both sides and get

 

x=25

 

 

I am not sure what you are referring to about the total cards before the dog ate it.  A standard deck of playing cards in the usa is 52 cards, if that helps...  :-)
