what is the whole number for 2.5

i'm working on  a math problem. I says: write the whole number for 2.5

Pam,

 

The number 2.5 has an integer part and a fraction part.  Many programing languages have a function that finds the "integer part".  I'm wondering if the question is asking for the "integer part" of the number

 

If this is the question, then   Integer-Part[2.5] = 2, and the Fractional-Part[2.5] = .5.

 

(Incidentally, if the number was 2.9 the integer part would still be 2 under this interpretation of the problem.)

 

Steve's answer doesn't make sense because the answer has to be a whole number based on the question.  Vivian's answer doesn't make sense either because "whole number for" doesn't imply any rounding, although her second answer about forgetting the fraction comes close to this one.

 

Why not ask your teacher to clarify the problem.

Hi Pam;

In round figures, this would be 3 because anything between 2.5 and 2.9 must be rounded up to 3.

If you just want to eliminate all information to the right of the decimal point, this is 2.

I wonder if they want 5/2, a fraction of whole numbers.
