In a sugar-water solution, the ratio of water to sugar is 8 : 3. If you add 2 kgs of sugar, the ratio becomes 2:1. What is the amount of sugar in the original solution in kg?

Original ratio, 8x : 3x

 

8x : 3x + 2 :: 2 : 1

2(3x + 2) = 8x           product means/extremes

6x + 4 = 8x               distribute

4 = 2x                       subtract 6 x from both sides

2 = x                         divide both sides by 2

 

Original ratio: 16 : 6, or 8 : 3

New ratio:      16 : 8, or 2 : 1
