   4(2x-5) = 5x + 4

   8x - 20 = 5x + 4

2-Use inverse to move the first constant

to the other side of the equation.

   8x - 20 = 5x + 4

        +20        +20

   8x        = 5x + 24

3-Get all of the variable terms on the same

side of the = using inverse.

     8x = 5x + 24

    -5x   -5x

   ------------------

    3x  =         24

4-Divide both sides by the variable's coefficient.

    3x = 24

   ----   ----

     3      3

 

    x = 8
