Eva is 8 years younger than Leo. The sum of their ages is 34. Define a variable. Then write and solve and equation to find Eva's and Leo's ages.

From the first sentence, E = L-8

From the 2nd sentence, E+L=34

 

Using substitution,

 

(L-8)+L=34

2L-8=34

2L=42

L=21
