Of the 56 shirts in a box, three- fourths are a size large. Liz and Diane take all of the larges to sell. If Liz takes 6 more shirts than Diane, how many shirts did Diane take to sell?

first you must figure out how many shirts they took

3/4 x 56 = 42

let D=diane's shirts

let D+6=Liz's shirts

 

D+D+6=42

2D+6=42

    -6   -6

2D = 36

/2     /2

D = 18

 

Diane took 18 shirts, and Liz took 6 more [24]
