The length of a rectangular room is 6 more than twice the width. The perimeter is 42. Find the length and the width of the room.

 This is one of the questions on my summer review packet and I do not quite understand it. Please help.

2w + 6 represents the length

 

42 = 2(w + 2w + 6)          formula for perimeter

42 = 2(3w + 6)

21 = 3w + 6

15 = 3w

5 = w
