a study of 2958 collegiate soccer players showed that in 46 anterior cruciate ligament tears, 36 were in women. Calculate the percentages of tears for each gender

I don't disagree with the previous answer but there is another way to look at this.

 

First, determine the percentage of athletes with tears in the total sample:

 

%tears = 46/2958 = .016 or 1.6%

 

Then, based on the % of tears for the 46 for men and women, which from the previous answer is:

 

men: 21.7%

 

women: 78.3%

 

we'd multiply the 1.6% by each to get:

 

0.016 * .217 = .003 = .3% tears for men (in the sample)

 

0.016 * .783 = .013 = 1.3% tears for women (in the sample)

 

All depends on how you interpret what the problem asks for.

The percentage of tears for women is the number of women with tears divide by the total number of players with tears.

 

36/46*100% = 78.26%

 

The percentage of tears for men is number of men with tears divided by total number of players with tears.

 

number of men with tears = 46 - 36 = 10

 

10/46*100% = 21.74%
