Brian, I think there is an error in the question, as stated.
Let's take Φ = π/3
LHS = (3/4 -1) / (3 - 1) = - 1/8
But RHS = 1 / (3/2) - 1 = -1/3
They aren't the same so it can't be an identity which is true for all angles.
