A coffee supply store waits until the orders for its special blend reach 100 pounds before making up a batch. Colombian coffee selling for $8.75 a pound is blended with Brazilan coffee selling for $3.75 a pound to make a product that sells for $6.35 a pound. How much of each type of coffee should be used to make the blend that will fill the order??

we know that the total weight will be 100p, and its price will be $6.35/p

then, x • $8.75/p + (100p - x) • $3.75 = 100p • $6.35

 

x$8.75/p + $375 - $3.75/p = $635/p

 

x$5.00/p = $260/p

 

x = 52p

100 - x = 48p

 

Proof: 52p x $8.75/p + 48p x $3.75/p = $6.35 x 100p

$455 + $180 = $635
