So we are going to assume that b=bikes, t=trikes, u=unicycles and we will be solving for u.
1. 88 more bikes than unis as an equation will be b=u+88
2. 5 times as many trikes as unis t=5u
3. 40 more bikes than trikes b=t+40
So now that we know that Bikes=u+88 and Trikes=5u , we can plug this into the final equation that in order to solve for u.
When you plug the first two equations into the last equation it becomes: u+88=5u+40
Bring the u over to the right side of the equations and bring the 40 over to the left side of the equation and you get:
48=4u
4u=48
Then you will divide each side by 4 so you get: u=12
