Although most flags are rectangular, Vicky has a point about triangular ones as well.
A possible answer might look as such: this could mean it might be a rectangle that is 3 feet by 4 feet or an isosceles triangle with base 4 feet and height 6 feet. It could even be an equilateral triangle with each side measuring 4 times the 4th root of 3, but that one is least likely since the measurement is irrational. I would not use a formula to answer the question since it seems to be trying to see whether you understand the concept of area itself.
I would think an answer like this is even more intriguing: Put two right triangles together so that each has one side 3 feet and the other side 4 feet to form a rectangle. Their area should be 12 square feet.
