the book says the answer should be sinX /sinX+cosX

OK. This isn't written very well. You have to work on that, or you may have trouble finding others to solve problems for you.

 

I will assume you mean

 

sec x / (sec x + csc x)

 

and I will use identities here:

 

(1/cos x) / ((1/cos x) + (1/sin x))

 

then multiply numerator and denominator by sin x cos x:

 

sin x / (sin x + cos x)
