If one dozen cookies are left over, and that represents 1/6 of the cookies, then we multiply 12 x 6 to find that we started with 72 cookies.

Hi Travina;
1/6(x)=12
12=one dozen
x=original quantity of cookies
(1/6)x=12
Let's multiply both sides by 6...
(6)(1/6)x=12(6)
x=72
