Hi Candice,
Factor the polynomial completely.
2x2+2ax−x−a
This polynomial can be factored using a process called Grouping.
Start by putting parentheses around the 1st two terms and then the last two terms.
(2x2+2ax)+(−x−a) I always put an addition sign between the two factors.
Now, take a look at the second set of parentheses. Usually we factor out the negative. Factoring out the negative, changes the sign of both terms inside the parentheses.
(2x2+2ax)+-1(x+a)
Now, looking at the 1st parentheses, what can be factored out? Looks like 2x
2x(x+a)+-1(x+a) Hint: the terms inside the parentheses should be the exact same.
The two factors are: (2x-1)(x+a)
We're finished!
