I don't understand how to do this with the negative sign in front

With a negative outside like that, you will distribute the negative. Think of it as a -1, rather than a negative alone. Remember that anything multiplied by 1 is itself, so anything multiplied by -1 will change the signs.

 

Step one: Distribute the -1 to switch the signs inside the parenthesis.

 

(2x - 4) +3x

 

Step two: Combine like terms

 

2x -4 +3

2x - 1

The negative in front of the parenthesis means to multiply the terms inside of the parentheses by -1.  This will change the signs of the terms. (2x-4)+3x Now simplify it.
