Hi Seth. Hope this helps.
What is the #1 rule of a square?
All sides are equal right?
What is a perimeter?
The total sum of all side of a shape added together.
So if a square has a perimeter of 36 then all four sides added together equals this amount.
so we write it like this:
4 times the length of a single side = 36
4 times the length of a single side = 36
or
4x = 36 (where x is the length of a side).
So to find out what x is we divide the perimeter into 4 parts.
x = 36 divided by 4
therefore x=9
So the length of a side is 9
We can check our answer by multiplying our side length of 9 by 4 sides.
4 x 9 = 36
