To solve for y means to isolate the y on one side of the equal sign all by itself.

 

Add 3x to both sides

 

-3x + y + 3x = -4 + 3x

 

The 3x's on the left side will cancel one another

-3x + y + 3x = -4 + 3x

 

And you'll be left with

y = -4 + 3x or

y = 3x - 4
