Focus on the solution, not the answer, when doing homework. No one cares if you can get an answer—that is, they tend to think you can write a neat, clear solution on the exam. The key is worth 99% of the grade, the answer is worth 1%, and after the grade adjustment (or curve), the HW is worth nothing and will not affect your quality one iota.
That being said, when doing your HW, if you don't practice writing solutions and give yourself practice exams, you are not preparing for the exam; all you are doing is getting better at HW, which isn't even part of your final grade. Silly students are.
