Prove the identity cot^2x - cos^2x= cos^2x - cot ^2x

For the equation cot²x - cos²x = cos²x - cot²x, the two sides are negatives of each other.  The only way that they can be equal is when both sides are equal to zero.  The equation as written is not an identity.
