show that cot^2x + cos^2x = cos^2x -cot^2x

I believe there is an error in your identity.  Here is why.  Suppose I subtract cos2x on both sides of the equation.  The cos2x terms are eliminated from the equation, and I will end up with
 
 
cot2x = -cot2x
 
These are not equal to each other.
