Let's solve for x two ways:
1) isolate x-terms first, then add/subtract, then find x
(1/2)x + 4 = (3/4)x - 3/2
(1/2)x- (3/4)x = -3/2 - 4 [subtract (3/4)x from both sides; subtract 4 from both sides]
(2/4)x - (3/4)x = -3/2 - 8/2 [find common denominator of each side]
-(1/4)x = -11/2 [collect terms]
x = 22 [multiply both sides by -4]
2) get rid of fractions first, then isolate terms, then find x
(1/2)x + 4 = (3/4)x - 3/2
2x + 16 = 3x -6
-x = -22
x=22
