asked 11/23/15Pittsburgh to NYC is 150 miles apart.
If I am taking a train to Pittsburgh at 50 MPH, and my friend is taking the train to NY at 75 MPH, at what point do we pass each other?
Probably somewhere in Jersey

The trains are traveling in opposite directions - so, their relative speed will be the sum of the speeds.
Relative speed = 50+75=125MPH
Distance between NY & Pit = 150 miles
Speed = distance/time or time = distance/speed.
So, time at which the trains cross each other is 150/125 = 1.2 hours
Distance traveled by train to Pittsburgh = 50MPH * 1.2 hours = 60 miles from NY
Distance traveled by train to NY = 75MPH * 1.2 hours = 90 miles from Pit
---------------*----------------------
NYC 60miles | 90 miles Pittsburgh

Let after x hours they meet.
50x+75x=150
125x=150
x=1.2 hours
