Consider a ramp that starts a chair's height (2 feet) up a wall and extends one foot vertically (y) every two feet horizontally (x). The slope is the rise over the run (the vertical divided by the horizontal). In the present example, one divided by two is 0.5. The intercept is the vertical point at which the line (ramp) crosses the horizontal (x) axis. In the present example the intercept would be 2. The equation of the ramp (line) would be y=.5x+2.
