      (9/4 pages) / (3/4 hour)

       (9/4)*(4/3) pages/hour         [to divide by a fraction, invert denominator and multiply]

I would say that the least complicated way to solve this problem is find out how many pages the novelist can write in 1/4 hour, and then multiply that number of pages by 4 to find out how many pages the novelist can write per hour.

 

So first you want to write 2 1/4 pages as a fraction instead of a mixed number:

2 = 8/4

8/4 + 1/4 = 9/4

2 1/4 = 9/4

 

Now you determine how many pages the novelist writes in 1/4 hour:

3/4 hour x 1/3 = 1/4 hour

so 9/4 pages x 1/3 = 3/4 pages

The novelist writes 3/4 pages every 1/4 hour.

 

Now to find out how many pages the novelist writes per hour:

1/4 hour x 4 = 1 hour
