America, Solving for y: -4=1+(2y-10). The parenthesis can be removed; So, -4=1+2y-10; Now, combine the like terms on the right side of the equation: -4=2y-9; Now add +9 to both sides of the equation: So, 5=2y; Now, divide both sides of the equation by 2. So: y=5/2 or 2.5 Also, it is understood that 1 is multiplied by everything inside the parenthesis.
