Let the number be x
 
X^2 + X = 12
 
X^2 + X - 12 = 0
 
(X + 4) ( X - 3) = 0
 
X  = 3 IS THE ANSWER

Given that the sum of a number and it's square is 12
and working it down to
 
(x+4)(x-3) = 0
 
x = -4 or  x=3
 
Both are valid answers;
 
-4 + (-4)2 = -4 + 16 = 12
3 + 32 = 3 + 9 = 12
