If 3/4 of the members left that means you have 1/4 of the members remaining. Think of it has a pizza pie with 4 slices, if 3 are taken away you have 1 slice left. Now what if your pizza pie had 8 slices to start with and I told you that 1/4 of the slices were left over? Well if 1/4 of 4 slices = 1 then 1/4 of 8 slices must be = 2, twice as many, but really you have to see that 1/4 times total number of slices = slices left over. In this case 1/4 of total members = 72 which is the number of members left over after the reduction. The word 'of' means multiplication, so the equation is 1/4 * X (total members) = 72 or
X/4 = 72
Solving for X we multiply both sides by 4
X = 288
