last step of variable equation

I have solved the beginning of an equation, but can't find the final answer. Here is what I have:

 

79a = 42

 

79a/79 = 42/79

 

a = ?

When we solve for a variable, we isolate that variable using algebraic methods.  Your first step is good.

 

79 on the left side of the equation cancel out, leaving just the variable.  That's exactly what you want.  Now just divide 42 by 79.

 

 

a = 42 / 79
