Then multiplication and division go before addition and subtraction.

 

So for this problem you will do:  inside parentheses, multiplication, division and addition and you will get the correct answer.

First, we simplify the dividend in the division.  That's  4(8 - 2).  

 

4(8 - 2) = 4(6) = 24

 

 

Now we simplify the divisor.  That's (3 + 9).   This becomes 12.

 

 

Finally, we divide the to results.

 

24 / 12 = 2
