A biologist finds that 20% of fruit flies have short wings and 26% have eye defects. Assuming these two events are independent what is the probability that a randomly selected fruit fly has neither short wings nor eyes defects

What is the probability that the fruit flies does not have short wings?

 

100% - 20% = 80% or 0.80

 

What is the probability that the fruit flies does not have eye defects?

 

100% - 26% = 74% or 0.74

 

"When two events, A and B, are independent, the probability of both occurring is:" 

 

P(A and B) = P(A) · P(B)

 

Therefore,

 

0.8 * 0.74 = 0.59

 

Answer = 0.59
