Question

Two hikers are 14 miles apart and walking toward each other. They meet in 2 hours. Find the rate of each hiker if one walks 1.8 mph faster than the other.

 

The speed of the slower hiker is ______ MPH

Let x = rate of one hiker

then 1.8x is the rate of the other hiker

14 = 2 * (x + 1.8x) = 5.6x

x = 2.5 mph

the other hiker is 1.8x = 4.5 mph
