A machine can process 300 parts in 20 min. How many parts can be processed in 45 min?

How would you solve this particular word problem?

If you are having difficulty answering this, you are probably having difficulty setting up the "proportions".  Sometimes it is easier to keep it simple and write out the equation after getting the answer.

It does not matter how you set the proportions up as long as things line up.
All of these are appropriate proportions for an example such as 25 parts in 10 min, how many parts for 15 minutes?:
  • 25/10  =  x/15
  • 25/x  =  10/15
  • 10/25 =15/x
Notice that all of these would end up as 10x = 25*15  after you cross-multiply.
