Franklin was a polymath. He was a profound author, printer, diplomat,political theorist, scientist, inventor. He indulged in civic matters which may have greatly influenced others such as John Quincy Adams. He yearned and worked hard at colonial unity.

According to two different sources I checked, Franklin had an obsession with self-improvement.  In his autobiography he indicates that he is committed to arriving at "moral perfection" or at least identifying ways to achieve it.
