How do you write an equation for this question I know the answer is 6 but how do you get that

A parking garage charges $2 for the first hour and $1 for each additional hour. Fran has $7.50 to spend for parking. What is the greatest number of hours frank can park?

Let x = the number of hours

 

She automatically pays $2 at the start.  Then $1 is added for each hour.

 

 

2 + x = 7.50

 

 

Solve for x.

 

x = 5.50

 

The greatest number of hours she can park is 5.5 hours.
