The more senses involved in skill acquisition , the more likely you are to achieve retention. The channels are ; visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile (VAKT). Once a skill is part of your motor memory it is most likely to become incorporated in your long term memory. We don't stop and think - this is how I walk- for example .Our motor memory kicks in and the response is automatic.
If you decided to learn to knit , for example, we would be using the visual, perhaps auditory and certainly the kinesthetic and tactile channels. You would be seeing a video or watching an instructor knit, you would perhaps hear auditory directions and you would repeatedly practice knitting (tactile and kinesthetic ). You would have quadrupled your chances of remembering how to knit by four rather than just hearing or seeing someone knit and tell you what to do
