After purchase, Joe should own 1/12 + 4/12  =  5 /12, wouldn't you say?

My best quote:  "With good people, a better process generally produces a better product."

Once Mark M. and I critique each other's work and agree on an approach/answer/strategy/etc., it is pretty tough to find a better approach/answer/strategy/etc.

Now, somewhere in our history, the resource-constrained approach of "1-teacher-to-25-students" in a classroom has been accepted.  However, with today's technology, there is little excuse not to have "25-teachers-to-1-studenrt" -- with the added quality factor that the 25 teachers share goals and strategies to provide an unified approach/strategy for teaching/learning that fits the individual student's (1) role, (2) learning style, (2) past performance, (3) mood-of-the-day, etc. (note: this is precisely how the variety and levels of achievement in computer games have made them additive.  Both technology (e.g., speech recognition/synthesis, robotics, AI, virtual reality, cloud storage/processing, Internet of things, ...) and approaches (individually-tailored instruction, highly engaging/immersive/interactive/student-directed learning) will supplant old methods.
