1 foot 4 inches  = 1 foot * (12 inches)/(1 foot)  +  4 inches   =  16 inches

1 yard  = (1 yard) * [(3 feet)/(1 yard)] * [(12 inches)/(1 foot)]  =  36 inches

 

The ratio is:   (16 inches)/(36 inches) = 16/36 = 4/9

     (note:  the ratio has no units; it is expressed here as a fraction)

There are 3 feet in 1 yard, thus 1 feet 4 inches is 1 and 1/3 feet. Converting this to an improper fraction gives us: 4/3 and this is divided by the three feet it takes to make 1 yard.

 

Answer: 1 and 1/3 feet is 4/9 of a yard
