Or when you say cos4(x2 - 1), do you mean cos4(x2 - 1)?
If that's the case, then the answer is different.
y = cos4 (x2 - 1) = [cos (x2 - 1)]4
y' = 4 [cos (x2 - 1)]3 * (-sin (x2 - 1)) (2x) =
-8x cos3 (x2 - 1) sin (x2 - 1)
