The problem also is that some sites state that the variance is the sum of the differences of the squares divided by
'n-1' and some state it is divided by 'n' which would make it the arithmetic average or mean of the difference of the squares.  Obviously, the book from which this problem was taken used 'n' instead of 'n-1' in calculating the variance.
 
Variance:  S2 = [∑(xi-xm)]/(n-1)   or   [∑(xi-xm)]/(n)   depending on which site you check...
 
Standard deviation is square root of the variance

Make that  [∑(xi-xm)2 ]/(n-1) .... or ....  [∑(xi-xm)2 ]/(n)
