3(x+4)=4x+6
Distribute the 3 on the left
3x+12=4x+6
Subtract 3x from both sides
12= x + 6
Subtract 6 from both sides
x=6
The perimeter of the triangle is the sum of the three sides. If each side is x+4 (4 inches longer than the side of the square), then the perimeter is 3 times that number or 3(x+4).
The perimeter of the triangle is 6 inches more than the perimeter of the square. The perimeter of the square is 4x, so the perimeter of the triangle is 4x+6 inches.
You can then set the 2 parts equal to each other (both forms of the triangle perimeter).
